WATERBABY THIN AIR

We've been enjoying ethereal London duo Waterbaby's tapestry-like live performances since before the pandemic. Having flown relatively under the radar, that could all be set to change as they share a tactile new single via left-field London label untitled (recs). Chanelling the otherworldly vibes of greats from Kate Bush to Cocteau Twins, Jenny Hval and Kelly Lee Owens, 'Thin Air' sees 80s synth sounds swoop across thudding beats, sprinkled in nostalgic stardust. As ever, Waterbaby's vocals are melodically bold and drenched in reverb, exaggerating the already mystical feel of their music. They reveal: “It's a song about duality. We shapeshift from being in the driver’s seat to going along for the ride, ‘am I the pilot, or the passenger?’, and travel from day to night. We use aerial analogies and flight metaphors to describe periods of ascent and descent, and the ups and downs of life. Throughout the song you soar and crash, sometimes looking down on the world below, existing somewhere in the clouds like an angel watching earth.” Listen and watch the self-directed/edited accompanying visualiser here now. -Holly Mullineaux
